Iran Violence: Iran’s judiciary said on Tuesday that Iran has sentenced five people to death for killing a member of the Basij paramilitary force during nationwide protests against the death of Mahsa Amini. Judiciary spokesman Masoud Setayeshi told a news conference that 11 other people, including three children, have been sentenced to long prison terms for murder, for which the sentence can be appealed.
According to a statement issued by the Judiciary Department in Iran, two months ago, Ruhollah Ajamian, a paramilitary soldier, died while trying to control the protesters. Then these demonstrations were held in protest against the death of a female protester named Hadis Najafi at the hands of the police. Najafi was a prominent face of the anti-hijab protests.

Prosecutors said Ajamian, a 27-year-old soldier, was stripped and killed by a group of mourners who were paying tribute to slain protester Hadis Najafi. Najafi was killed on 21 September, five days after Mahsa Amini’s death sparked a wave of protests across Iran.

Iran accused the US and its allies, including Britain, Israel and Kurdish groups, of fomenting unrest in the country. Amnesty International said on 16 November that, based on official reports, at least 21 people were accused of crimes that could lead to execution.
Iran currently executes more people annually than any other country apart from China, according to the London-based human rights group. Hundreds have been killed and thousands arrested, including 40 foreign and prominent actors, journalists and lawyers. Among them are 12 alleged members of an unidentified European-linked group who are accused of planning the sabotage.

In a statement quoted by the Tasnim news agency, the Revolutionary Guards in Markazi province, southwest of Tehran, said they had “arrested 12 members of a group with links abroad”.
