Second CDS Of India: The Government of India has appointed retired Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan as the new Chief of Defense Staff (CDS). The post of CDS was vacant after the death of General Bipin Rawat. Anil Chauhan will be the second CDS of the country. For the first time in the country, a non-Army chief and a retired officer has been made CDS i.e. Chief of Defense Staff. Although even before this, there have been changes from time to time in the organization and administrative structure of the army.
It is worth noting that the Government of India had created the post of Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) in the year 2019. First of all, in the year 2020, the then General Bipin Rawat was appointed to the post of CDS. Unfortunately, the post of CDS remained vacant after General Rawat’s death on December 8 last year. After this, today i.e. on 28 September 2022, retired Lieutenant General Anil Chauhan was appointed as the new CDS of the country.
Retired from the rank of Lieutenant General or General can also become CDS
Earlier this year, the Ministry of Defense made some changes in the rules for the new appointment to the post of CDS. According to the new guideline, those who have retired from the rank of Lieutenant General or General, but their age is less than 62 years on the date of appointment, then such officers will be considered eligible for the post of CDS. Name of the working Lieutenant General or its equivalent to the General can also be considered for the post of CDS.
The road became a bit difficult for the retired army chief
According to the notification issued under the Army Act 1950 and the Navy Act 1957, the tenure of the three Chiefs of Army Staff is three years’ service or till they attain 62 years of age, whichever is earlier. In such cases, it is a bit difficult for retired Army Chiefs to be appointed for the post of CDS. Because usually such army chiefs are 62 years old by the time they reach the post of CDS.
may be considered in certain circumstances
In another situation, if for some reason the post of the existing CDS becomes vacant and none of these three service chiefs have retired, then any of them can be considered for appointment to the post of CDS.
